How Stake.us Provably Fair Works

"Provably fair" gets thrown around a lot, but most people never actually check what it means. The short version: on Stake Originals, the outcome of every game is locked in before you play, and you can prove afterward that nothing was changed. Here's how it works in plain English — and how to verify a result yourself in about 30 seconds.

The three ingredients

• Server seed — a secret string the platform generates. You see its hash up front (a fingerprint), but not the seed itself, so it can't be changed without you noticing.
• Client seed — a string on your side that you can change anytime.
• Nonce — a counter that ticks up by one with every play.

Combine those three, run them through a fixed cryptographic function (HMAC-SHA256), and you get the random numbers that decide your result. Same inputs always produce the same output — that's the whole point.

Why it can't be rigged

Because you're shown the server seed's hash before you play, the platform is committed to that seed. When you later "rotate" your seed, the old server seed is revealed — and you can re-run the math to confirm every result came from the seed they committed to. If even one byte had been changed, the hash wouldn't match.

Provably fair proves the past was honest. It does not — and cannot — predict the future. Anyone selling a "predictor" is selling snake oil.

How to verify a result yourself

Once you've rotated your seed on Stake to reveal the old server seed, you have everything you need:

1. Grab the revealed server seed, your client seed, and the nonce of the play.
2. Drop them into my Provably-Fair Seed Checker.
3. It re-derives the exact random numbers (right in your browser — nothing is sent anywhere) and shows the result. Match it against what you saw. Done.

Does this mean you'll win?

No — and that's important. Fair doesn't mean profitable. Every game still has a house edge, so over time the return is less than 100% RTP. Provably fair just guarantees the game is honest, not that it's beatable.
